In 1891, at a time when most people believed that the future was in lighter-than-air balloons, Trouvé, convinced that heavier-than-air machines were the future, built a model ornithopter and ingeniously incorporating a system of explosive cartridges to flap its wings, achieved an unprecedented flight of 80 metres.
