Artificial Muscle
1877 Struck by the considerable effects that a weak electric current produced on his muscles, Trouvé thought that here must reside one of the principle receivers of electromotive force. He therefore constructed an artificial muscle, replacing the active molecules of the muscle with little electromagnets. Recalling the children’s game of paper-chains, he built a machine that was made up of a chain of electro-magnets. His machine was aimed at giving students an idea of muscular contraction.
